Mixed Media

Family room remodel

(Alameda, CA)

  • custom cherry shelving/storage for books, computer, and audio-visual equipment
  • integration of vintage Japanese panels to conceal plasma tv
  • re-facing of existing fireplace with honed black granite and plaster
  • doors and windows replaced with insulated, laminated units for enhanced soundproofing

Today, the house has become home to a variety of media as well as people. Books, radio, television, and the Internet all compete for place (and space) in our domestic environment. How can technology and people coexist?

Here, a family room is enveloped by new media walls providing open shelves for books plus stereo equipment while drawers contain compact discs and miscellaneous items. At the same time, niches carved out of these walls create distinct places for furniture and a computer desk.
